The analog TN-5BB turntable from Japanese HiFi specialist Teac supports a symmetrical MC output, has a hybrid housing combining synthetic marble, Washi paper and MDF materials, and a 9-inch S-shaped universal arm. The housing has a multi-layered structure with a heavy 36mm MDF base plate and a 12mm plastic marble plate (the weight of the housing is 8.8kg). This provides high feedback resistance. The tonearm and platter are mounted on the synthetic marble top plate, while the motor, which causes vibrations, is mounted on the MDF base plate. These separate structures isolate the tonearm and motor from each other. The overall structure is extremely stable and reduces the vibrations transmitted from the motor to the tonearm. Japanese Washi paper is the best material to use as a base between the synthetic marble and MDF to achieve optimal sound balance. By using Washi instead of rubber or metal, the original sound liveliness is retained when playing records. Ideally, the platter would continue to rotate by its own weight, but of course that is impossible. The TN-5BB uses the belt drive method with a flat belt that transmits the power of the DC motor to the outer circumference of the platter. An optical sensor at the bottom of the platter detects the rotation speed of the platter, and an automatic rotation adjustment mechanism then controls the motor with servo. This Platter Rotation Sensing Servo System (PRS3) realizes high rotation precision, which is difficult to achieve with a motor alone. By supporting three speeds, 33-⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, this turntable can play both old records and 78 rpm records with high audio quality. Acrylic with excellent flatness and internal loss is used for the platter. The 20mm thick acrylic has a weight of 1.7kg.
