In a hip-hop industry saturated with loopfinders and beatmakers, Pete Rock stands out--alongside Premier, DJ Spinna and Jay Dee--as one of the scene's inspirations, and Petestrementals is no exception. With a career spanning 15 years, he has repeatedly come up with the goods, whether it be his two LPs with CL Smooth in the early 1990s (which spawned classic cuts such as "Straighten It Out" and "When They Reminisce Over You"), solo endeavours such as 1998's Soul Survivors or his ever on-point remix work. On Petestrementals he digs into his crates once more to present us with another solo album full of the laid back, funky and soulful vibes that we've come to expect from the producer. The album moves through dusty loops, twisted samples and deftly sculpted beats and although predominantly instrumental (as the title suggests) Pete has provided a few vocal tracks featuring new skool crew the UN which break things up nicely. All in all, this is guaranteed head-nod hangover material and further reinforcement of Pete Rock's revered status in the hip-hop game. --Paul Sullivan

If you approach 'Petestrumentals' as a song-oriented pop album, you may feel disappointed. Only two tracks ('Cake' and 'Nothin' Lesser - Jamie's Mix') feature MCs. If you approach the album as a radical work of sonic architecture, you may also feel disappointed, since Rock's relatively old-school sensibility isn't likely to make you hear music in a completely new way. But if you approach 'PeteStrumentals' on its own terms - as a laid-back collection of atmospheric beats ideal for late-night chilling or freestyling over - then you may enjoy Pete Rock's soulful funk-jazz grooves, which are first rate for this type of recording.
